Yaz and the FDA

In 2008 the FDA sent Bayer an eight page WARNING LETTER (bolded and all caps to emphasize the seriousness of the matter) telling the company that changes needed to be made to their commercials for Yaz and Yasmin.  The problems the FDA cited in regards to the commercials were the representation of the medications’ effects on PMS, acne, and the minimization of risks.

In response to the WARNING LETTER, Bayer changed their commercials and clarified the points the FDA had requested.  The commercials emphasized that Yaz only helps with PMDD and not PMS.  The edited version explained that Yaz and Yasmin don’t completely get rid of acne but can help decrease pimples. There is also more emphasis placed on the possible risks. See the new version of the commercial below.

Scientists in the U.S have reported safety concerns over the popular  birth control pill Yaz which they believe can increase the risk of dangerous blood clots more than older medications.

A new study released by the Food and Drug Administration reviewed the medical history of more than 800,000 U.S. women taking different forms of birth control between 2001 and 2007.
Effects: Mrs Ubersox ended up in hospital after she developed blood clots and her heart stopped

Under scrutiny: Scientists have raised concerns over the likelihood over woman developing blood clots if they take Yaz as a form of birth control

On average, woman taking Yaz had a 75 percent greater chance of experiencing a blood clot than women taking older birth control drugs.

Yaz contains estrogen along with a next-generation synthetic hormone called drospirenone, which is known to increase potassium levels in the blood. The means that Yaz can cause heart attacks.

Yaz, Yasmin and related drospirenone-containing pills were Bayer's second-best-selling franchise last year at $1.6 billion in global sales.

In 2009, the FDA took the unusual step of ordering Bayer to run corrective TV advertisements for Yaz on the ground that the drugmaker's marketing campaign overstated the drugs' ability to prevent acne and premenstrual syndrome.

BLINDED BY YAZ  BIRTH CONTROL PILLS, A Yaz Story

User: Carissa Ubersox, a paediatric nurse from Madison, Wisconsin, said that birth control pill Yaz 'sounded like a miracle drug'

Carissa Ubersox (left), a paediatric nurse from Madison, Wisconsin, went into a coma and was blinded after taking Yaz.

Ubersox, 24, started using the birth control pill in the run up to her wedding but three months later she ended up in hospital after her heart stopped.

She is now suing the company after blood clots in her legs had moved to her lungs, causing a double pulmonary embolism.

One the way to hospital her heart stopped. She was revived but went into a coma for almost two weeks.

What is yaz ?

Yaz Contains  estrogen, which is present in all birth control pills. Yaz has been proven to cause blood clots which can be fatat. A deep vein Thrombosis, or blood clot in a deep vein, has the potential to move. Thy cn move to the lungs or brain and be fatal.

Dr. Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Center for Women and Families said: 'At a certain point we have to ask why the FDA continues to approve drugs that are less safe and have no benefit compared to drugs already on the market.

'With different birth control options, why take the most expensive one that can also kill you?'

Recent studies have reached differing conclusions on the risks of newer birth control pills.

A study published this week involving more than 1 million Danish women found that women taking Yaz and other newer medications had twice the risk of blood clots as women taking the older hormone levonorgestrel.

The findings appeared Tuesday in the British Medical Journal.

However, two studies published in 2007, conducted as part of the post-marketing requirements of the FDA or European regulators, did not find any difference in blood clotting between the two comparable groups.

Birth-control pills that contain drospirenone include Bayer's Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz, Safyral; Sandoz's Syeda and Loryna; as well as Barr Laboratories' Ocella, Watson Pharmaceuticals' Zarah and Teva Pharmaceuticals' Loryna.

“To all the women still taking Yaz"

“Here is my story… I was on Yasmin for 6 years. About 4 years into taking the drug, I noticed a mass on my right side… I went to KU Med and was told that I had to have emergency surgery right away, and that I was basically a walking time bomb…. If I tripped and fell, it could cause this mass to rupture and I could bleed to death…They did a liver resection and removed my gall bladder and several lymph nodes. The mass on the scan turned out to be 2 grapefruit-sized benign masses, called Focal Nodular Hyperplasia – most commonly caused from the hormones in birth control pills!!!!…This whole ordeal has DRASTICALLY changed my life and affected all of the people I love, my husband included, who has to endure all of my pain and anxiety. BOTTOM LINE – IT’S JUST NOT WORTH IT! TELL EVERY WOMAN YOU KNOW!”

Vicky Caprice Mersereau, 26, died in 2009 of a large pulmonary embolism after she ingested Yasmin

Yasmin, which is made by Bayer Inc., is one of  united State's top-selling birth control pills. It is a so-called "fourth generation" hormonal contraceptive and is considered "low dose."

Yaz Side effects are serious and sometimes fatal

  • blood clots
  • heart attack
  • stroke
  • pulmonary embolism
  • gall bladder disease
  • deep vein thrombosis

Blood clots can cause a blockage of arteries that carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to other tissues resulting in:

  •     Stroke: either slow-developing caused by thrombi, or rapid-onset caused by embolism.
  •     Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): a "mini-stroke" without tissue death.
  •     Myocardial Infarction (heart attack): blockage of the coronary arteries that supply oxygen to the heart muscle.
  •     Pulmonary embolism: life-threatening blockage of arteries in the lungs, starving the body of oxygen.
  •     Angina pectoris: reduction of blood supply to the heart, typically resulting in severe chest pain.
  •     Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): a clot formed in a deep vein, usually in the legs.
  •     Portal vein thrombosis: a rare blockage of the vein that carries blood from the abdomen to the liver.
  •     Renal vein thrombosis: a blockage of the vein that drains blood from kidney.

Plaintiff Suffered Pulmonary Embolism After Using Yaz

The Ohio lawsuit of Beck v. Bayer alleges that the embolism was caused by Yaz:

Yasmin, (a predecessor to YAZ), known generically as drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol, is a combination birth control pill originally developed by Defendant BERLEX LABORATORIES, INC. and/or Defendant BERLEX, INC containing the hormones estrogen and progestin. The estrogen is ethinyl estradiol and the progestin is drospirenone, (3 mg of drospirenone and 0.03 mg of ethinyl estradiol per tablet) Combination birth control pills are referred to as combined hormonal oral contraceptivesYasmin was approved by the FDA in April, 2001In 2006, Bayer acquired Defendant BERLEX LABORATORIES, INC. and/or Defendant BERLEX, INC, and began marketing an almost identical drug, YAZ (which contains 3 mg of drospirenone and 0.02 mg of ethinyl estradiol per tablet). The difference between YAZ/Yasmin and other birth control pills on the market is that drospirenone has never before been marketed in the United States and is unlike other progestins available in the United States. In April 2002, the British Medical Journal reported that the Dutch College of General Practitioners recommended that older second generation birth control pills be prescribed in lieu of Yasmin as a result of 40 cases of venous thrombosis among women taking Yasmin. In February 2003, a paper entitled Thromboembolism Associated With the New Contraceptive Yasmin was published in the British Medical Journal detailing a Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre report of five additional reports of thromboembolism where Yasmin was suspected as the cause, including two deaths.Defendants have been warned at least three times by the FDA; in 2003, 2008 and 2009, for misleading the public through the use of ads which overstate the efficacy of YAZ and/or its predecessor Yasmin, and minimize serious risks associated with the drug. The use of YAZ has a prothrombotic effect resulting in thrombosis such as the pulmonary embolism suffered by Plaintiff. Defendants ignored the correlation between the use of YAZ and increased thrombosis formation despite the wealth of scientific information available.

Wrongful Death from Yaz can occur when a blood clot moves thru the body.

A 2009 study published in Contraception explains how Yaz may increase the risk of pulmonary embolism and other cardiovascular injuries, because pills with the chemical combination of drospirenone (progestin) and ethinylestradiol (estrogen) cause an increase in lipid peroxidation. This leads to high levels of serum copper, a situation that increases the risk of cardiovascular injury, such as

Blood clots. Blood clots anyplace in the body can be dangerous but, in the brain or lungs can be fatal.

Virginia Yaz Birth Control Helpline News

Richmond, VA: Although Bayer is currently settling thousands of Yasmin lawsuits, Yaz and Yasmin attorneys say it isn't too late to file a Yasmin claim. As of April 26, the drug company says it has settled 651 cases and thousands more are pending.

Yasmin Lawsuit Settlement UpdateYasmin lawyers advise claimants to contact their attorney if they haven't yet been notified about a possible settlement with their case. Law firms with the largest amount of cases are being contacted first.

In its Stockholders' Newsletter for the first quarter, Bayer said it has paid $142 million in the settlements, averaging about $218,000 a case. On April 13, the drug manufacturer agreed to pay about $110 million to settle the first 500 Yasmin lawsuits in the US, according to Bloomberg News. Pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) cases are being settled and at this point, the company is not considering settlement of any gallbladder cases. By April 18, the company said it faced 11,900 Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits involving approximately 14,000 plaintiffs.

However, Bayer is not admitting any wrongdoing in any of the settlements, even though in early April the FDA ordered Bayer and other contraceptive makers to include stronger blood-clot warnings on their products. Researchers say that birth control pills containing drospirenone may triple the risk for blood clots.

Richard Vosser, a JPMorgan Chase & Co. analyst, predicts that Bayer may have to pay more than $2.65 billion to resolve all the venous clot injury cases over its birth control pills, which may include all contraceptives containing the synthetic hormone drospirenone.

Yasmin and Yaz litigation, including about 50 wrongful death lawsuits filed between 2004 and 2008, has plagued Bayer since 2009. The suits claim that Bayer did not properly inform women of the risks involved, and it marketed Yasmin and Yaz for off-label uses, to treat acne, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Despite these huge payouts, Bayer reported that sales and profits in the first quarter were higher than analysts' estimates. And it would appear that Bayer does have deep pockets. Sales of its contraceptives amounted to $1.58 billion in 2010 alone.

overview of Drugs and medical devices harming Women, Yaz, Yasmin, Blood Clots

Yaz Causes Blood Clots, Pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, stokes and heart attacks. Yaz has destroyed the future of many young women and some have died. Fosamax was tauted as the cure all to poor bone density and osteoporosis. Doctors. lured by pharmaceutical company representatives. Imagine a drug for Osteoporosis causing femur fractures. It is almost an oxymorone. As we move along we have Yaz and Yasmine birth control pills. These were taken by young women to offer more freedom. Bayer had special parties where young wome were convinced the these drugs would help their social life. Many social service organizations were offering these to prevent unwanted pregnancy and college campuses were offering a new found sexual freedom. In the age of liberation this was the wonder drug until the complications set in and college girls  were ending up in emergency rooms. Mothers were losing daughters and young women were having their lives dramatically altered by pre-mature strokes and heart attacks. it appeared the chemical base of Yaz and Yasmin increased the potassium in the blood. Postassium effects the rhythm of the heart and heart attacks were occuring. Yaz and Yasmin also caused blood clots, deep vein thrombosis and pulmnary embolisms in young women. Many just girls barely starting a college life

.

History moves along and even the DePuy Hip Replacement, a metal on metal hip replacement recalled for its's vast need for revision surgery effects women more then men. Apparently ithe smaller frame of a women makes the device more prone to problems in the female statute.

And here come the biggest disaster for women, the various vaginal mesh devices for urinary incontinence and uterine, bladder and bowel prolapse. This mesh device is made of a Prolene plastic synthetic fiber and apparently is not holding up. Wome across the country are screaming the horrors of the vaginal mesh. They are in severe pain. Some describe it as razor blades. The mesh is eroding thru the vaginal wall and at times itnot the bladder and bowel. having it removed appears to have its issues as well. Women can no longer have sexual intercourse and marriages are breaking up. Women cannot work and are losing their jobs and health insurance.  Even if there was a Doctor to help they have not money to pay for it. Last but not least we have the Mirena IUD. Apparently the Mirena Slicone IUD. Sound familiar?

The Mirena silicone IUD is showing side effects very reminiscent of the old Dow Silicone breast implants. We also have women prone to breast cancer who should not be implanted with it and the estrogen component is showing evidence of Breast cancer in some women. And last but not least it is gravitating out of position and effecting other near by organs by cutting or severing .

All in all we have many medical devices and drugs effecting women. When a women trusts a doctor it is devastating to find out they were harmed. Women are becoming depressed with sever emotional ramifications from devastating illness and complications. Many feel their loves have been ruined. Chat room are full of "MY experience " with—-. These stories are not pretty and many are stories of loss and a life ruined.

And one must continue to watch in awe as our T.V screens are filled with lawyers seeking to vindicate these women. Many are quite sensitive to the issues. We see one after the other. So many of these are the drugs and devices that harm women. can a dollar settlement help a ruined life?

Teen says blood clot after taking Yaz destroyed her life

Courtesy of Lynsey Lee

Lynsey Lee, 19, was diagnosed two years ago with a blood clot in her left lung, months after she began taking the birth control pill Yaz.

Lynsey Lee hoped Yaz would relieve her severe menstrual cramping and pelvic pain, so she began taking the birth control pills when she was only 16. But, instead of getting better, she started experiencing extreme mood swings, nausea and even more pain.

“I got really, really sick,” says Lee, now 19, of White Bluff, Tenn. “I was just constantly throwing up, and it was getting hard to breathe sometimes.”

Then, she started having unbearable chest pains that sent her to the hospital what seemed like every few days. Doctors initially couldn’t figure out what was wrong. “They kept telling me that it was just my body getting used to the medicine,” she says. “Finally, [when I was 17] I just stopped taking it.”

Later that year, after numerous medical exams, doctors diagnosed a blood clot lodged in her left lung. During one emergency room visit, doctors asked Lee what would become a life-changing question for thousands of young women like her: “Have you ever taken Yaz?”

Now, she is among the more than 10,000 American women who have filed class action lawsuits or claims against the German pharmaceutical giant Bayer, which makes Yaz, a popular birth control pill. Thousands more claims are expected. In documents released Tuesday, the Food and Drug Administration raised questions and other similar pills, including life-threatening blood clots, and said warning information should appear on labels for doctors and patients.

Thursday, the FDA's panel of experts agree  that current labeling on the medications isn't enough and should be updated with more information on the risks. But that news comes too late for Lee.
